Alan Roberts, a firm fixture in the club from the 70s to the 90s, died yesterday after a lengthy period of ill health. The two pictures are probably representative of how he would like to be remembered, in the middle of team mates and fellow Wids committee men.
An old school “Art of Coarse Rugby” figure, Alan was heavily involved in club life, whether playing for the Nomads (5th XV) who he captained in 1980-81 with current President Elect Geoff Council as his vice-captain, refereeing on the original Prescot Road pitches (now a housing estate) or in his role as Honorary Secretary from 1988 to 1991, part of a nine year stint on committee.
His efforts earned Alan election to vice-presidency but he had to turn down a planned term as President due to deteriorating health. Nonetheless, he sent a financial donation in response to the Lockdown appeal and made a cash contribution to the juniors in recognition of the section’s survival and success.
His time as Secretary culminated at the Town Hall in 1991 where he attended, alongside other club officers and players, Widnes RUFC’s civic reception following the Lancashire Cup victory against Orrell at Waterloo.
There will be many recollections brought up over a pint or two in coming weeks, not least about Alan’s time and travels with the Mad Wasps.
Our thoughts and condolences go to Carol, Alison, Christopher, Grace, Lynn, Andrew and the rest of Alan’s family.
Further details will be printed when known.
