After a disappointing result last week at Manchester and with Kendal posting over 80 points against Birkenhead Park today’s fixture was billed to be a tough test for the Wids and it was, despite the scoreline.
Pregame it was a simple message, work hard! From start to finish put the effort in and play our rugby.
Wids had a great start, working to shape and structure, pressured Kendal but it was the visitors who scored first after a Wids error cost field position then with Kendal moving the ball wide we simply ran out of numbers in defence, it felt a little bit like last week but fair play to the lads they can settled into the game and started building momentum.
Ryan Millington got the wids on the scored board after the forwards set the platform with Alex Glover converting 7-5
Dan Salter was next to score for the Wids, again after the forwards set a pace to the game which Kendal couldn’t live with. Not converted but Wids building a lead 12 - 5
Kendal kept pushing and getting forward but every player was solid in defence, often driving Kendal back then with the ball in hand, Kendal couldn’t live with the Wids and Rueben Mafi got over after a typical strong run 17 - 5.
Half time came and it was a simple message, keep doing what your doing, working hard and controlling the game.
The weather turned as we the game got back underway with heavy rain which was a leveller for both teams, the Wids was first to score after a great period where the whole team worked hard to take the game by the scruff of the neck, Charlie Cross showed fast pace and agility to go wide then get into the middle to score. Alex Glover converting and now 24 - 5
Kendal then had quite a sustained period of possession, getting into the Wids 22 but defensive effort and rugby smarts kept them from scoring points.
The Wids pushed up and to be fair, could have scored a couple of times but Kendal kept fighting and made the Wids rush, which then caused errors and loss of the ball but Wids kept at it and after Kendal kicked to relieve pressure Alfie Mather at 15 made a great return before the backs used the ball wide and Dan Salter got his second to take the score 29 - 5 and out of touch for the visitors.
Final score 29 - 5
MOM - Rueben Mafi
It was a superb team effort from the off, the lads got the result they deserved through their hard work and commitment to each other.
Next week we look forward to Vale away
