Widnes secured a deserved victory over local rivals LSH. Early indiscipline by the visitors enabled Neil Street to convert two early penalties. LSH’s young back line always looked threatening, and eventually they crossed on the left wing. This was closely followed by a mazy run by the LSH full back who scored under the posts.
Widnes came back with a strong forward surge. Line out ball secured by Chris Rigby was followed by a push over try by Neil Street on half time. The hooker converted his own try to regain the lead 13-12.
LSH’s 2nd half kick off went dead and, from the resulting scrum, centre Tom Abbott scored a converted try under the posts. Widnes’ forward power enabled Nicky Preston to drive over in the corner to extend the lead to 25-17. LSH responded, with tries for their centre and full back, with another effort disallowed. Preston then scored a repeat try with Street converting from the touchline. LSH again bounced back and, despite heroic defence, scored again. The conversion could only bring them within one point as the referee signalled the end of a thrilling game.
