The Wids denied the visitors the league title last season, and the two sides renewed their rivalry with the Seconds seeking revenge for an away defeat earlier in the season.
An evenly balanced game started with Widnes in the ascendency. However a penalty goal allowed the HC to take the lead. Widnes hit back immediately with a penalty of their own, thanks to the boot of Tom Beech.
Widnes hit the front not long after, Fullback Josh Salter getting on the end of a fine backs move and when winger Ben McQuillian cut back inside Salter would throw an outrageous dummy to dive over in the corner. Beech added the extra off the touchline to push the lead to seven points.
That lead would soon go to ten points with Beech again on target with the boot.
Holmes Chapel did hit back, after a silly penalty on the half way line; Chapel opted for the corner. Some fast thinking saw them take a quick line out to throw the Wids in to disarray. Widnes would halt the attack only temporarily as the pressure told with a Chapel penalty try.
The first half scoring was rounded off with a try by captain Tom Griffiths. As Holmes Chapel attempted to clear their lines with a kick; winger James Owen managed to take it on the full, making a half break and acting quick to pop the ball off the floor to a rampaging Tom Griffiths who rounded the fullback to go over under the posts. Beech again on target to leave a half time score of 20 - 10 in favour of the home side.
Holmes Chapel would come out in the second half the better of the two sides and were on the scoreboard after building pressure in the Widnes half.
Widnes then scored the best try of the game as Eddie McAdam went through inside his own half, breaking two tackles before finding fly half Danny Price with an offload, who flicked it out the back door to Jack Gilhooley who raced clear to score. Beech again added the extras to put the Wids back in control.
A physical game then threatened to boil over as Ben Mercer was sent to the sin bin for an apparent late tackle. Chapel took advantage and powered over from a line out to get the game back to a three point gap.
Things got worse for the home side as they were down to 13 men as Eddie McAdam also saw yellow. However some heroic defence saw them hold out Chapel for the final five minutes to claim a memorable victory.
Head coach Dan Newall spoke after the game. “That was one of the most physical games I've seen us play. One of our main messages before the game was concerning our discipline, which for the majority of the game was great we just let ourselves down a couple of times and it almost cost us.
I thought we were the better team throughout the game to be honest until the sin binnings we were always in control. We played some great rugby at times, we used our forwards well and our replacements gave us some good impact off the bench.
The effort today particularly in defence was outstanding, and I am not sure how the boys managed to keep them out for a good five minutes on our line at the end.
I also thought that Jon Hetherington had a massive impact on the game today from the side line. He is fantastic to have around the team going forward”.
The Second team have a week off to look forward to next week then another revenge mission against Bowdon at Heath road in two weeks time.
