The 2s travelled over to Anselmians today and a response was needed after last weeks result at Fylde and as the score shows, a response was given by the playing group.
Leading up to the game it was a simple message, run hard, tackle hard and work together and this is exactly what happened, forwards worked together as units and the hard charging Matt Blakey crashed over the white wash, Alex Glover converting 0 - 7
With the forwards setting the pace of the game, Anselmians couldnt live the physicality of the Wids pack and it was another hard running forward in Rio Hamlett to score next after a dominate run, Alex G again converting 0 - 14
Anselmians are no push over though and continued to push and probe the Wids line and at times we tried to play too much but through dogged defence kept them at bay and as the game started to open up, the backs came out to play.
There was a scrappy bit of play and the inform Charlie Cross put a kick in for on debut young winger Jake Winstanley to collect and force his way over. Alex with his kicking boots on , slightly aided by the post but 0 - 21 for the Wids and looking good for it.
With the Wids again working hard through the forwards, Alex Glover showed pace and agility to break the Anslemians line open to get a try, conversion complete 0 - 28
Just before the half time break, Wids was reduced to 14 for a high tackle but the resolve from the lads was excellent and they dogged it out to the break.
Message at half time was simple, keep running hard, keep tackling and keep working hard for each other, take pride in the 0 for the home side and keep them there.
Starting the half with 14, wids had to control the ball and keep the defence on point which they did in spades, after some good possession it was the forwards time again, Adam Menia was tireless throughout the game and was rewarded with a close in try, Alex again converting 0 - 35.
With the game getting away from Anselmians, the Wids was a little guilty of not maintaining discipline, a couple of pens gave the home side field position, resulting in a line out on the Wids 5m which we couldn’t keep out, despite a great effort. 5 - 35
The Wids soon hit back though, after a load of hard graft from the team, no 15 Jack Buck put a nicely weighted kick in for Charlie Cross to collect and score 5 - 40 as not converted.
To be fair, despite a valiant effort the home team was on the ropes and the hard pace of the game was taking its toll, Wids kept pushing though and a scrappy bit of ball which I think many players was expecting a referee decision to come in, but it didn’t so this gave Evan Milne an opportunity to nudge the ball through, collect and score, Alex G converting and the final score 5 - 47
From 1 - 18 every player did their job today, working as units, be that forwards or backs and rightly got the result they deserved. Well done lads!
We have a break next weekend before heading over the bridge againX playing Ellesmere Port on 21st November.
