It was their second away victory on the bounce and helped lift the 'red-and-blacks' in to joint fifth place in the table alongside Douglas (IOM) and the men from Burrows Hill.
In what was a terrific team performance by the Wids; they managed the game superbly, and putting on a terrific show in both defence and attack.
In the end, they were able to secure a bonus point scoring five tries in the process from; Liam Lawton, Kurt Riley, Lewis George and two from fullback Andy Clarke, whilst Liam McGovern added four conversions.
As predicted in the forecast, the weather for the game was mainly awful with gale force winds and squally rain showers threatening to put a dampener on the afternoon’s proceedings.
Ultimately, though, that proved not to be the case, and both sides produced what was an entertaining and absorbing contest.
Despite the difficult conditions, the visitors got off to a great start, as Liam McGovern’s quick-fire pass freed up captain for the day, Liam Lawton who raced home from thirty metres for a try.
McGovern then added the difficult conversion attempt from wide out to make it 0 – 7.
Park, though, to their credit were back in the contest almost immediately, as wing man McCafferty crossed in the corner for a try which reduced the arrears to just two points.
The score appeared to lift the home side, and for a while they looked as if they might just get over the line again. However, the Wids defence remained resolute and firm before they were able to finally clear the danger.
Prop forward Kurt Riley then went on a rampaging run through midfield before Charlie Feeley and then Andy Clarke both went close.
Finally, after 26 minutes, the Wids pressure did tell as Riley crashed over from close range to re-establish the visitor’s earlier advantage.
And things got even better for the ‘red-and-blacks’ just two minutes later, as Liam McGovern’s kick to touch wasn’t dealt with effectively by the Park defence, who allowed Lewis George to collect and race clear to score a try, with the touchline conversion also going over to make it 5 – 19.
Four minutes later, Kevin Leadbetter leapt higher than a salmon to collect Liam McGovern's towering up and under, which saw Jamie Patient's chip ahead bounce perfectly for fullback Andy Clarke to collect and run in behind the posts for the bonus point try.
Liam McGovern then added the easy conversion attempt to make the score 5 – 26, before they then lost a player into the sin-bin for a high tackle as half time approached.
Widnes continued to hold on to their advantage at the start of the second half, and could have increased their lead further, but two long range penalty attempts in the difficult conditions narrowly missed their target.
After 49 minutes, Park then lost a player into the sin-bin, whilst Widnes took the opportunity to introduce Matt Blakey, returning scrum half Ciaran O’Donnell, and new boy Adam Menia, who was making his first team debut following his arrival at the Club over the summer.
Park continued to throw everything at the Wids in order to try and re-establish a foothold back into the contest, but the ‘red-and-blacks’ defence remained in unforgiving mood.
It looked like the visitors were going to make the game safe on 66 minutes when Lewis Geoge broke free from close to his own line after picking up a loose ball.
With a clear 75 metres in front of him, it looked all over for the home side, but a Park defender chose not to give up the chase and he was able to pull off a tremendous cover tackle just yards from the line.
The danger wasn’t over yet though for the home side, and when the ball was swung across to the opposite flank, Andy Clarke was on hand to score his second try of the afternoon.
Liam McGovern then added a superb touchline conversion to all but wrap things up for the visitors.
With just minutes to go, Park were able to get themselves over the whitewash for a consolation effort before the referee finally brought proceedings to a close.
Head coach Liam McGovern said afterwards “Today was a performance that has been coming for a few weeks. No matter who you play in this league to go away and dominate in the manner we did was great to see and the scoreline reflected that resulting in us picking up the five league points.
I thought we were patient with the ball in hand and caused Winnington a lot of problems. I was especially delighted with the way our forwards stood up and dominated the opposition especially with them recruiting heavily from overseas in the off season.
The backline showed maturity in both attack and defence, and also just how dangerous we are when we get the chance to score.
Overall, it was a very good away performance especially defensively and we will enjoy it, but back to the hard work on Tuesday and Thursday where we continue to work hard to become better Rugby players.”
