It was their biggest ever win since the leagues were restructured in 2018-19.
The Wids were in red hot form right from the off, scoring at a rate of more than a point a minute throughout the whole encounter; a result that sets them up nicely ahead of another derby day clash against West Park on Saturday.
Centre Liam Lawton was the star of the show crossing for four tries, followed by further scores from; Jack Krause (2), Gavin Hatton, Alex Jones (2), Allan Breeden, Will Patient, Tom Spencer and Keiron Arndell. The goal kicking duo of Kevin Leadbetter and Josh Salter were also on form adding eleven conversions between them.
The weather for the game was dry and bright, but there was a strong, freezing cold wind blowing down the pitch for the full eighty minutes.
Not that any of that seemed to bother the Wids, who were playing against the elements in that first half. They were quickly out of the blocks, and had a try on the scoreboard inside the opening two minutes, as Liam Lawton crossed following some smart handling.
Shortly after the re-start, wing man Jack Krause was able to stand up his opposite number, before then racing 60 metres for a super try that was goaled by Kevin Leadbetter.
Then, it was Warrington’s turn, as Phillip Lynch ran a great angle to score a try which was converted by Luke Little.
Normal service was then resumed, as Liam Lawton got on the end of a break from Keiron Arndell to score his second try of the afternoon.
As early as the 16th minute, the Wids then recorded that much needed additional extra bonus point as Gavin Hatton crossed for a try after some great work from captain Tom O’Neill.
The versatile Alex Jones was next on the scoresheet as he went over for another try, before Lawton went on to complete his hat-trick after being put through a big hole by Jamie Patient.
That sent the Wids in at half-time leading by 40pts – 7.
At the break, the visitors introduced the trio of Arnie Haydock, Allan Breeden and Tom Spencer from the bench, but that failed to disrupt their momentum, which soon increased as Breeden raced clear from 40 metres to score a try.
A few minutes later, a super pass from Haydock sent in that man Lawton for his fourth score of the afternoon.
Despite being well-behind, Warrington continued to take the fight to Widnes, and were rewarded with another try from Lynch to make it 14pts – 52.
After that, the procession of Wids scores continued as they finished the game strongly.
Alex Jones, Will Patient, Tom Spencer, Keiron Arndell and finally Jack Krause, all added further tries with the trusty boot of Josh Salter doing the rest to round off a great day at the office for the ‘red-and-black’ faithful.
Head coach Andy McIntosh said afterwards “A top performance today by the lads, playing into a strong wind we got off to a great start and never looked back.
Everyone played their part and to do that in a derby match away from home was very pleasing.
We really threw another good marker down and challenged ourselves ahead of next week".
