Widnes Colts Review of 2008/9 Season

Widnes Colts Review of 2008/9 Season

Geoff Council18 May 2009 - 16:00

WIDNES COLTS

Widnes RUFC Colts had their best season for decades winning their respective League as well as clinching the Lancashire Cup after an absence of 31 years.

Back in 1978 the Colts had former Rugby League star Tony Myler playing his last rugby union game before turning professional.

The Colts strength this season has been their defence restricting seven teams from getting over the Wids try line. The red and blacks started the season strongly winning their first three games before going down by a single point against Staffordshire outfit Newcastle. They then went on a winning run to mid February before losing away at Douglas Valley to eventual runners up Wigan who finished one point behind the Wids. The Colts clinched the League title away at third place Manchester 18-13 in their last league game of the season.

The League Cup saw Widnes travel to Chester and came away with an excellent 32-11 victory. The following week saw Widnes push Stockport all the way only to concede a late try which proved to be their third and final loss of the season.

In the Lancashire Cup, Preston Grasshoppers were pushed aside 44-0. Invited guest side Huddersfield were next to fall victim losing 24-7. In the semi-final cup favourites Liverpool St Helens travelled to Heath Road with high hopes only to be sent home with their dreams shattered going down 24-14. On 3rd May the Wids Colts finally brought the Lancashire Cup back to Heath Road defeating Wigan 21-9 at Fleetwood resulting in jubilant celebrations long into the night.

Phil Harrison picked up the player of the year award for the third year running pushed all the way by Tom McMuldroch and Jon Hetherington but the success story was across the team with Chris Schofield playing and captaining Lancashire Under 18's, Mark Wilcox and Justin Winstanley breaking into the first team with Wilcox also representing Lancashire under 20's.

The continued improvement of Gavin Hatton, Andy Griffiths, Niall Green, Nathan Williamson and Chris Morgan were a major factor in the successful season. George Lang, Josh Paton, Liam Clark, Callum Hancock and Tom Raymond who had moved up from last season's under 17's side developed as the season progressed.

Head coach Paul Newall would like to thank the players for their effort and commitment in training and games and also assistant coaches, Ged Snee, Dave Griffiths and Liam Wilde who have given great help during the season.
