Graham Teasdale has brought the news that his old friend and playing colleague Paul Williams died of a heart attack recently. The two came from Eagle and became part of the Heath Road fixtures and fittings at the time of seven teams and packed Saturday night discos.
They are the two bearded ones in the photo. Paul is wearing the red pullover and clutching a pint glass. He was a solid second team front row forward who proved a valuable asset as the firsts occasionally played matches on consecutive days and midweek, courtesy of the Lancashire Cup.
He made his Wids 1st XV debut in 1978/79 and Martin Griffiths recalls Mike Street trying to lure Paul and Graham back to Eagle with Martin going along as hooker.
There will be a fund of stories for old club stalwarts to exchange; judging from last Saturday, they have already started. A memorable figure deserves remembering.
