John Geddes 1936-2926

John Loughnane18 May - 13:42

Olympic Medallist, Wids Sponsor and Vets’ Cycling Motivator

Having received a message about the death of John Geddes at the weekend, it’s worth reflecting on the quiet influence he had on Widnes RUFC, particularly his encouragement for people of all ages and abilities to get out on their bikes.

Originally a plumber from Liverpool, in 1978 he opened his shop in Widnes and later Whiston following a successful career as a professional cyclist in the 50s and 60s. As an amateur in 1956, he won a bronze medal in the 4000m team pursuit at the Melbourne Olympics.

A long term advertiser at the Wids, he applauded the opening of the Trans Pennine Trail and suggested to us that it could provide an excellent fitness exercise for ageing rugby players. Between 2003 and 2006, informal riding groups from the club covered the full distance from Southport to Hornsea plus the offshoot routes going to Liverpool, York, Chesterfield and Leeds. Photos of the later stages are in the website media section under “Trans Pennine Trail 2006”.

The John Geddes Widnes Road shop features in the Widnes RUFC 6 mile Centenary Circuit booklet “A Tour of Our Town”.

Rest in Peace with thanks for support, servicing and original suggestion.
