Bryn Ellis RIP

Bryn Ellis RIP

John Loughnane30 Dec 2025 - 20:01

Halton RUFC long term stalwart who became Wids Vets regular at the turn of the century

We have just received news of Bryn Ellis's death after a lengthy illness. As ironies would have it, this is in the week of the annual Wids Generation game, a day that he so much enjoyed. The team photo is from the 2001 Vets v Colts match. Bryn is standing fourth from the right, giving an indication of his height. His time at the Wids was significant enough to merit this AI Overview: "Bryn Ellis is a name associated with Widnes Rugby Union Football Club, particularly in the early 2000s, where he played for their Veterans (Vets) team, known for his strong presence in the line-outs alongside players like Andy Rigby, contributing to the team's performance and featuring in local news reports." He came to Heath Road at a turbulent time in club history and threw himself whole-heartedly into social events aimed at revitalising the Wids on and off the field. More often than not, he would be side by side with Brian Gill who had also moved round the corner from ICI Rec some years earlier. This enthusiasm included taking part in the Christmas Panto which was a feature for just three years but gained prominence in Rugby World and is talked about to this day. Our condolences to Bryn's family. He was quite a character and a great loss.

Bryn's funeral service will be held at Widnes Crematorium on Friday 23rd January at 2pm. Following this, his family have invited old friends and playing colleagues to join them at the Wids for refreshments and reminiscences to celebrate his life.
