Brian was a well-known and much-loved Widnes character who sadly passed away with Covid in February this year. He played rugby for Halton RUFC and the Wids where he represented the first and second teams. He went on to become the driving force behind the revival of our Vets team. He also played rugby league for Widnes St. Marie’s RLFC and maintained a keen interest in both codes within the town.
Martin Griffiths, Club President, said, ‘Losing Brian was a big shock to everyone, he was such a popular guy in Widnes. The family were keen to get a positive result out of such a sad situation, and we were all astonished by the response to the fundraising from members of Widnes RUFC, Halton Farnworth Hornets ARLFC and Widnes Golf Club along with Brian’s many friends and work colleagues.’
In line with the family’s wishes, proceeds from the appeal are being split between the Intensive Care Unit at Whiston Hospital and Community Rugby in Widnes.
The photo shows Brian’s sons Michael, Christopher, and Shaun, along with Martin and Brian Tobin, Chairman of the Hornets, making the presentation to staff from the ICU.
Michael said, ‘Donating to the ICU was an obvious choice to us. Even though we couldn’t be with Dad, we knew the staff were doing everything they could to look after him and they made sure to stay in contact with my Mum so she knew what was going on each day. The staff were amazing.’
Chris said, ‘We want to use the donation as a way of saying thank you for the care our Dad received while he was at Whiston. It’s been a really sad time for us all, but we hope that making these donations in Dad’s memory will benefit other patients and the next generation of rugby players.’
Claire Simmo, Whiston and St Helens Hospitals’ Charity Community Fundraiser said, “On behalf of all the staff in our Intensive Care Unit I would like to say a huge thank you to Brian’s family for thinking of us during this very difficult time. This donation will make a massive difference to future patients in our unit.”
The 5k for Bri challenge has been supported by about 150 participants, whilst over 200 supporters have donated to the fundraising appeal, a testimony to the high regard in which Brian was held.
Thank you to everyone for your magnificent support.
