Following promotion into NOWIRUL Baines Plumbing Division 1, the challenge for the 2025/26 season was clear: compete at a higher level, continue developing players, and prove that Widnes 2nd XV belonged.
The squad did exactly that.
The season opened with six straight league victories over Birkenhead Park Wanderers, Rochdale, Vale of Lune, Blackburn, West Park and St Edward’s, setting the tone for a strong campaign and showing the team could compete with anyone in the division.
The months that followed brought both success and challenge.
Highlights included impressive away wins at Eccles and Aldwinians, alongside several high-scoring performances. Victories such as 64-24 against Rochdale and 66-29 against Eccles showcased the attacking quality and confidence within the squad.
There were setbacks too. Narrow defeats to Sandbach, St Edward’s and West Park underlined the fine margins at this level, while injuries and availability issues regularly tested the group. Despite this, the squad continued to compete, adapt and improve.
While results matter, the success of the 2nd XV extends beyond league position.
Player development remains the team’s core purpose, providing a pathway from junior and colts rugby into the senior game. Throughout the season, players stepped up, gained valuable experience and contributed across the wider club.
A particular highlight has been the successful transition of several former Colts players into adult rugby. Moving from age-grade rugby into the senior game can be one of the biggest challenges in a player’s development, but this group embraced that challenge. Their commitment, attitude and willingness to learn have strengthened the squad and demonstrated the importance of the pathway being created at Widnes RUFC. Seeing young players develop the confidence to compete alongside experienced senior players has been one of the most rewarding aspects of the season.
The squad’s character was a defining strength. Commitment to training, a willingness to learn and a competitive mindset created an environment where players of all ages and experience levels could develop.
The coaching group challenged the squad to improve discipline, accuracy, ruck effectiveness and decision-making. Progress was evident across all areas, with further growth still to come.
As the season concludes, there is plenty to celebrate.
Widnes 2nd XV not only proved they could compete after promotion but established themselves as a respected Division 1 side while continuing to play a vital role in the club’s development pathway.
Thank you to every player, coach, volunteer, supporter, sponsor and family member who contributed throughout the season.
The foundations are stronger.
The standards are higher.
The focus now is on building further and continuing the journey together.
