They also extended a warm welcome to the lads who played in the curtain raiser prior to that match.
The purpose of the invite was simply to acknowledge the achievement of what happened fifty years ago, and the links that existed, and still exist between the two clubs.
Lots of familiar names from both teams were in attendance in what turned out be a packed Heath Road clubhouse as everyone remembered that special day on Saturday, 10th May 1975.
The Wids down the years had players who turned pro, and some featured in that Wembley final – Eric Hughes, Barry Sheridan, and on the bench at No.14, but a regular in that team, Jimmy O’Neill who also coached the juniors, Colts and First team, was Chairman of Rugby and a current vice-president.
In the curtain raiser that day were six members of the Wids Colts team – Paul Newall, Dave Ruane, Ade Beckett, Mike Martin and Ray Galloway who were all in attendance, whilst Ian Morley, who sadly passed away in 2006, was represented by his wife Ann Marie. Ade, Ray and Paul also played First Team for the Wids whilst Paul also captained the team for three years including the 1991 Lancashire Cup winning team.
