The Wids made a promising start in the first game of the season against a good Waterloo side visited Heath Road today

Finally!!! The season has begun for our U13s, its been a long summer and it was good to get back to some Sunday rugby today. Played in quarters to give both teams time and space to adapt to the new laws for U13s, each quarter was competitive and played well by all boys

1st Quarter 15-0
The boys started with real enthusiasm and kept possession for long periods through some disciplined rucking and then spreading the ball out wide. Alfie H stood out for some brave dives on the ball to keep Waterloo from gaining possession after a loose pass. Bobby started well and was popping up all over the pitch to tackle and also run to gain good ground. Eventually, the Wids patience paid off with Ben and Joe scoring after some good runs.
2nd Quarter 0-20
Waterloo turned up the pressure in the second quarter with some big players who were difficult to stop. The Wids forwards had to work hard but eventually Waterloo broke through for a series of tries in quick succession. Some of the boys took this badly and needed a bit of motivation to learn and move on. Whilst some rucks were good, too many Wids players were getting drawn in and then not quick enough to get to the next one.
3rd Quarter 5-10
After a good team talk the boys started again with more determination. The forwards were quicker into the rucks and Joe and Alex continued to put in some hard tackles. Charlie managed to breakthrough the Waterloo line to score and it could possibly have been more if the Wids had more depth when attacking.
4th Quarter 0-5
The last quarter saw some good passing although the ball often went loose at the critical moment.
Peter King did a few good drives into the Waterloo half and Joe’s persistence paid off with another try. Wids defended well to keep Waterloo off their try line although again there were times when too many players were drawn into a ruck leaving the defensive line exposed.

Improvement in depth when attacking as well as the forwards getting quicker to the second/ third ruck of a sequence will make a difference in future matches but the boys should be pleased with a good first game.

Next week we welcome Leigh to Heath road in the first our Lancashire cup games for 2019, see you all there.
