Widnes were on the score sheet within 2 minutes, after a fantastic run down the left wing by Dan Doyle, who was tackled just short of the line. Great support play by Jamie Patient, allowed Patient to pick up a loose ball and dive over the line for Widnes first try. Three minutes later, Patient repaid Doyle, after another impactful run by Patient, Doyle stepped inside to receive Patient’s pass and cruise over the line. Leigh rallied and played to their strength using their forwards to bulldoze over the line and score. Widnes regained their composure and Doyle again stepped past the Leigh backs to set up Andy Owens for his first try and conversion. Widnes increased the pressure after a dominant run by Allan Breeden, allowed him to set up Will Johnson for his first try, after a superb off-load by Breeden (Converted by Owens). Leigh replied by another well worked try from their forwards. Widnes fifth try of the first half came from Josh Salter after he picked up the ball from a ruck and ran round the Leigh forwards. The first half saw both teams up some crunching tackles in and as the whistle blew for half time Widnes led 29 – 12.
Widnes maintained the pressure in the second half and started to use the width of the pitch as Leigh tired, Johnson with a neat pass set up Owens for his second try. Breeden again used his strength and power to bulldoze his way over the line for a try (Conversion by Owens). Leigh were now tiring and were kicking more ball away. They kicked right to Johnson, who caught it just outside the Leigh 22 line and ran it straight back to claim his second try (Converted by Owens). Breeden and Johnson combined again minutes later, Breeden with his physical presence soaked up the Leigh forwards and provided a great offload to Johnson who scored his hat-trick try (Converted by Owens). The half time substitutions of Luke Millington and Alex Howell again put pressure on Leigh. Millington powered over the line to score.
Leigh pushed forward, but after winning the line out ball in their own 22, Alex Howell passed it out to the backs who played it from one side of the pitch to the other, only for Howell to run the distance and receive a pass to send him crashing over the line. Widnes completed their try-fest after a strong weaving run from Owens allowed him to also to attain a hat-trick try. As the full time whistle blew Widnes led 72 – 12.
