Penrith 32 - 22 Widnes

Penrith started brightly and were rewarded with a converted try after some good play by the forwards.

Widnes soon replied when slick handling by the backs created space for Matty Geraghty to score near the posts for a try which Andy Owen converted.

Penrith regained the lead when a fortuitous bounce left Owen stranded and the Penrith player took the ball to score a second converted try.

Penrith stretched their lead when missed tackles in midfield left the Penrith winger with space to score in the corner for an unconverted try.

Widnes then stepped up the pace and were rewarded with a try from winger Dan Doyle after good work from the forwards. Owen could not add the extras but it was game on again.

The second half started with Penrith on the attack but good defence turned the ball over and Owen cleared the line with a towering kick into the Penrith half. Owen chased his kick and with the Penrith defender slow to react Owen fly hacked the ball twice to re-gather and score wide out for a try which he could not convert.

Penrith increased their lead with a penalty before Widnes hit back with a try in the corner from Will Johnson after great play from the forwards. Owen failed with the conversion from wide out.

Penrith secured the game with two late tries but were made to fight all the way for a win which all but secures the league title for them.

Every Widnes player gave their all with outstanding performances from runner up Allan Breeden and MOM Will Patient.

Widnes finish their league programme this week with a home game against Leigh.
