Unstoppable Widnes put on a 9 try display that showed just what they're capable of with a full complement of players.

They swept aside a tough opposition who had no answer to the free flowing rugby and aggressive defence that is the stock-in-trade of this seasons Colts.
Sean Glover opened the scoring when he ran onto a short ball from Rob Cooke and cut through the Makos line. Alex Jones slotted the conversion from in front of the uprights. Jones was next on the scoreboard scoring an excellent individual try. Picking the ball from the base of the scrum on the half way line, he opted to take the ball blind, and beat two defenders to score in the corner. He was unlucky with the difficult conversion from the touchline, with the ball hitting the far upright and bouncing wide.
Widnes prop Dom Oxley started the move for the next score with a solid run off the back of a ruck. He recycled the ball well, and fast hands from the Wids backline resulted in Tom Whitfield delivering a perfectly timed pass to set winger Matt Geraghty on his way to the line. Jones once again successful with the conversion.
The final score of the half was set up by Alex Jones, again opting to attack a short blindside, moving the ball to second row Tom Whitfield who raced down the touchline, cutting in to finish under the sticks. Jones added the extras to give a healthy looking half time score line of 26-0 for the home team.
There was no respite for Makos in the second half, with the Wids continuing to play expansive rugby and taking the game to the opposition at every opportunity. With 8 minutes of the second half played, and a yellow card reducing the Wids down to 14 men, hooker Will Patient went over for his first of the season. Allan Breeden had made the initial break scattering the Makos defence, Patient was in support and in a determined effort to score took 3 defenders over the line with him. Jones successful with the conversion once more.
Josh Salter crossed next for the first of his tries. A rampaging run from Joe Head took the Wids to within 10 metres of the Makos line, and fast hands gave Salter just enough room in the corner to stretch out and score. Jones struck his best conversion of the afternoon to take the score to 40-0.
The Wids were in no mood to relax and continued to ask questions of the visitors defence. Allan Breeden broke from the back of a scrum inside the opposition half, stepped out of two tackles, and scored his first try of the game. This was quickly followed by his second. Tom Whitfield with an excellent take in the lineout serving up good ball for the backs, and Josh Salter providing a well timed pass, giving Breeden a 20 metre run in.
A rare spell of possession, and some good work by their pack, enabled Makos to get within striking distance of the Widnes line. For several phases of play the Widnes defence held firm, desperately trying to keep the opposition scoreless. Eventually the pressure resulted in a try for the visitors, and a well struck conversion gave them 7 points.
At 50-7 and with barely enough time left for the restart the Wids could have been forgiven for running down the clock, but they didn't. Another midfield break by Breeden, off the back of the Widnes pack winning turnover ball, resulted in Josh Salter racing in out wide for his second try. Will Patient stepped up to take the difficult touchline conversion and demonstrated why he's the fourteenth choice kicker for the Colts.
An excellent demonstration of just what the Wids are capable of when they're on form saw them run out convincing winners. Makos played well in patches but were unlucky to meet the Wids in such a determined mood.
