With no first team fixture it was the second team who took centre stage and didn’t disappoint with a 57 - 12 victory over a tough Lymm side.

The Wids started the game off brightly and were ahead within the first 5 minutes thanks to a Chris Morgan penalty goal.

Morgan was also the first on the try scoring sheet. Scrum half Josh Paton making the initial break from inside his own half, before getting the ball away to Morgan to go over under the posts. The back rower adding the extras to his own try to give the home side a perfect start and a 10 - 0 lead.

However that was as good as it got in the first half for the Heath Road outfit and a poor 20 minutes littered with errors and penalties followed resulting in Lymm turning the tables to lead at half time 12 - 10.

In what was a game of 2 halves the Wids would come out firing after half time, scoring seven tries and keeping their opponents scoreless.

Prop forward Matt Blakey was the first to go over riding a tackle on his way to the line. With centre Tom Spencer next over the line, getting on the end of a fine backs move. Further break away tries from James Rooney, Josh Argent and 2 from fullback James Owen saw Widnes stamp their authority on the game. Man of the match Chris Morgan on target with the boot to convert all kicks in a fine performance.

Morgan would be involved in the final try of the game taking the ball from a scrum to dummy his way through a hole and draw the fullback to allow Spencer to grab a second and close out the game.

Jon Hetherington sat down with backs coach Dan Newall and man of the match Chris Morgan to talk us through the game on the clubs official YouTube channel.

Newall “We feel we were really poor in that first half today, we weren’t happy at half time when we spoke to the lads. We just weren’t controlling the ball anywhere near as well as we needed to, the penalty count was far too high we just didn’t stick to our game plan. However to come back from being behind showed a lot of determination from us. It was great that the lads listened to what we highlighted at half time and went out an implemented the changes we asked for so credit to the boys for turning it around in such a big way. However we know there’s still a lot for us to improve on.”

Morgan also looked ahead to next week’s trip to LSH. “I think if we can just cut them penalties out more than anything, that will see us right. When we don’t give silly ones away we can really use the ball well those pens just piggy back other teams down the field and stops us having that ball. As soon as we cut them out we’ll be flying.”
